Xlendi TowerXlendi Tower has been handed over by the Government in to the joint care of Munxar Local Council and Din l-Art Helwa. This is the first time that a public site has been handed over jointly to two entities. Present during the signing of the agreement were Parliamentary Secretaries, Chris Said and Jason Azzopardi.

The tower is now to be restored and made into a tourist attraction for everyone to enjoy.

Chris Said said that through this signing, Local Councils are given the responsibility to protect their historical heritage, in cooperation with organisations that are experts in the sector.

Munxar Local Council have now been given three properties, an area in Triq Guze ‘Aquilina which will be turned into a playing field and a windmill near to Xlendi church, as well as the tower.

The tower, located at the entrance to Xlendi Bay is unique because it is the oldest free standing watch tower on Gozo, built in 1650 under the rule of the Grand master Lascaris. The tower is also of special importance because it has a viewing platform facing seawards. It covers 156 square meters over two floors and it’s main purpose was to keep pirates and smugglers from entering the bay.

The two Parliamentary Secretaries also visited the windmill that had been given to the council and is also being restored for opening in the future to the public. The windmill is mid-twentieth century.
