Gharb Day and Twinning Activity 2009Between the 27th of August and the 1st of September, the Gharb Local Council will be hosting delegations from Comunita’ Collinare Colli Tortonesi and Veglie. Both localities will be visiting Gharb for the first time to sign a new twinning agreement. This twinning event is funded by the European Union under the Europe for Citizens Programme.

Comunita’ Collinare Colli Tortonesi is a community of 10 Local Councils found in Piemonte, Italy. The Local Councils representing the Comunita’ are:

Carbonara Srivia, Carezzano, Gavazzana, Paderna, Sardigliano, Sarezzano, Spineto Scrivia, Villalvernia, Villaromagnano and Volpedo.

This group of Councils all have perfect geological and climate characteristics to produce high quality wine. Apart from this, the area is also rich in historical and cultural aspects and is infact a well known tourist area.

On the other hand, Veglie is a town in the Italian province of Lecce in the Apulia region of south-east Italy. Veglie is located 20 km west of Lecce and 12 km east of the sea, the Gulf of Taranto. It is a small village similar to Gharb and it was founded around the 10th century. It’s origin name comes from the pre-Messapic ‘vel’ of the Mediterranean origin meaning ‘elevation’.

Its main industry is agriculture which features the production and manufacturing of olive and wine. Ice cream is also produced in the village.

The visit of the invited towns has been matched with the celebrations of Gharb Day 2009. During their stay the guests will be having a cultural programme which will highlight the rich, cultural, religious and historical aspects of Gharb and the Maltese Islands. Various activities will also be organised to give the opportunity to the guests to integrate with the local residents and to discuss topics of a European Dimension and share experiences with the local committees. Topics to be covered include inter-cultural dialogue and the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009 amongst others.

Gharb Day Celebrations will be spread over three days. On Friday, the 28th of August a welcome dinner featuring local cuisine will be held at Pjazza Zjara tal-Madonna, with the participation of the Gharb community and guests from the invited towns. The aim of this activity is to engage all citizens from each invited town and have them feel at ease and welcomed. Moreover it will serve as an ‘ice-breaker’ for participants to get to know each other in an informal and entertaining manner. The entertainment will feature folk singing by the Ghaqda Folkloristika tal-Qiegha.
