Rebuilding of Xlendi Road starts tomorrow – Ministry of Gozo

Tomorrow, the rebuilding of Xlendi Road will start, this project is being financed through co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund under the Policy Cohesion of the European Union for the period 2007-2013.
The rebuilding of this road forms part of a larger project that also incorporates the construction of the road for the Ta Pinu Sanctuary, on which started work last December and is expected to be ready in the coming weeks. This project will entail the reconstruction of 2.5 kilometers of road, which is estimated will cost around € 9.5 million.
The aim of this project is to improve the quality of roads and accessibility to these two major tourist attractions in Gozo, for the benefit of both residents and tourists visiting this the island.
The works will include rebuilding the road, construction of rubble walls, new service installations of water and sewage as well as strengthening the system of electricity.
The Ministry for Gozo said it is taking all measures necessary to reduce the inconvenience while the works are ongoing, by facilitating alternative routes. The traffic at Xlendi will be able to pass through Munxar. Alternative routes for those coming from Mgarr and Ghajnsielem, are through Xewkija and Sannat.
This project is 85% financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Cohesion Policy of the European Union for the period 2007-2013, and 15% from national funds.
This is one of several projects that will be co-financed by the European Union, as part of the 10% of European funds that the government committed to Gozo. In this regard the Ministry for Gozo said it will continue to work to improve the quality of life in the island of Gozo. The Ministry added that the work on this road infrastructure will mean that the roads in Gozo will be further enhanced through funds acquired through membership in the European Union.
