September tourist arrivals in accommodation up amost 11%In September, total arrivals in collective accommodation amounted to 130,421, an increase of 10.5 per cent when compared to last year. The average length of stay during the month stood at 6.4 nights.

Non-resident arrivals and nights in collective accommodation both registered increases over 2009, and stood at 117,442 and 788,960 respectively. Increases were recorded in the five, four and three-star hotel categories, while two-star hotels and stays in other collective accommodation registered a decline. The average length of stay for non-residents stood at 6.7 nights and remained unchanged from last year. During the same period, resident arrivals totalled 12,979, 10.1 per cent less than 2009, whereas resident nights registered an increase of 11.7 per cent (40,204). This resulted in an increase in the average length of stay which was calculated at 3.1 nights for the year under review.

The overall net occupancy rate in collective accommodation establishments, stood at 70.4 per cent, with an increase of 6.7 percentage points when compared to last year. The non-residents occupancy rate stood at 66.9 per cent, while resident occupancy increased by 0.3 percentage points reaching 3.4 per cent. A significant increase was noted in the occupancy level of three-star hotels and guesthouses.

During September, arrivals in Malta advanced by 11.2 per cent, while total nights rose by 13.6 per cent, with a resulting increase in the average length of stay. Increases were also noted for Gozo and Comino. The occupancy rates in Malta and Gozo (and Comino) stood at 70.6 per cent and 65.1 per cent respectively. At a regional level, the three- star hotel category recorded substanial increases in occupancy rate. Separately, the average length of stay for Malta and for Gozo (and Comino) remained comparatively stable and stood at 6.5 and 4.1 nights respectively.

The overall net supply of bed-places in Malta was 39,283, up by 877 units when compared to the corresponding month last year. Bed-places in Gozo and Comino dropped slightly to 1,702. At a national level, the net number of bedrooms increased by 450.
