St George’s Basilica pays tribute to Bishop Nicholas J. CauchiFour months on the death of H.L. Mgr Nicholas Joseph Cauchi, Bishop of Gozo between 1972 and 2006, St George’s Basilica of Victoria will pay tribute to his memory with a programme of two celebrations taking place at the basilica itself:

• a Musico-Literary Evening on Saturday 12 March 2011, at 8.00pm, with the participation of the Laudate Pueri Choir and the La Stella Band; and

• a Pontifical Requiem High Mass on Sunday 13 March 2011, at 11.00am, presided by H.L. Mgr Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo and Dean of the Collegiate Chapter, with the participation of the chapter and clergy.

Bishop Nicholas J. Cauchi had special ties with St George’s Basilica, mainly because it was he who on 8 December 1975 signed the decree Etsi Deus, thus founding the Collegiate of St George, and reserved for him as diocesan bishop and for his successors the first dignity in the chapter. This was the only college of canons in the Diocese of Gozo to be erected during his episcopate, following the new norms of the Second Vatican Council.

Furthermore, Mgr Cauchi has left a rich legacy of writings and homilies on the patron of Gozo, St George, including two pastoral letters on the occasion of two centenaries (1984, 2003).

The commemorative programme in honour of Bishop Cauchi to be held in March is being organised by the Historical and Cultural Committee of St George’s Basilica in collaboration with the Right Reverend Chapter of St George’s, which right after the death of Mgr Cauchi had made an official request for the remains of its founder to be taken in the Basilica as part of the solemn funerals.

For the occasion, St George’s Basilica will be launching a souvenir publication and a commemorative exhibition.
