Seher il-Punent Festival 5th edition concludes successfully

The Gharb Local Council has sucessfully concluded the fifth edition of Seher il-Punent Festival which was held last weekend, the 1st to 3rd of April, 2011.
The festival was officially opened by Mayor David Apap together with the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono and Parliamentary Secretary Dr. Chris Said.
The festival commenced on Friday, the 1st of April, with a Traditional Dinner organised by Tal-Qiegha Folk Foundation in collaboration with the Local Committees. The evening was animated with folklore music by Ghaqda Folkloristika tal-Qiegha and Traditional and popular Music by Spiru Sillato and band with participation of Kav. Joe M. Attard.
Saturday evening opened with a defilee by Ghaqda Dilettanti tal-Karnival followed by the second edition of the Tug of War Competition, with a total of eight Gozitan and Maltese Groups participating, plus an Italian guest participant from the Italian Tug of War Federation.
The evenings main event featured the full cast of the popular TV programme ‘Deceduti,’ who presented the evenings entertainment and introduced the various local acts which participated. This was followed by comical Deceduti sketches which were specially prepared for Seher il-Punent Festival.
A large number of people attended for this popular attraction, where they also had the unique opportunity to meet their favorite personalities. Decedcuti’s participation during Seher il-Punent Festival was in fact their first show in Gozo.
The evening continued with the participation of the winner of the Malta Song Festival, Glen Vella and a live concert by popular Maltese Singer Freddie Portelli.
The activities for Sunday, the 3rd of April, the last day of the festival, were kicked off by a re-enactment of a Traditional Maltese Wedding together with other folkloristic entertainment presented by the Aurora Folk Group.
Another attraction during Sunday activities consisted of the production of the largest Gbejna cheese which this year reached a weight of 77kg, surpassing last year’s Gbejna which weighed 35kg. Visitors had the opportunity to taste the Gbejna together with other typical Gozitan products, such as fruit and wine.
For the second consecutive year, a get-together was organised for Motorcycle enthusiasts in the main square, whilst various dancing companies performed throughout the afternoon.
The final of the Tug of War Competition was held and a group of youths from Gharb ‘Ghaqda Briju tal-Festa’ succeeded in winning this competition for the second time. This was followed by a live concert entitled ‘Back to the Oldies’ on the main stage by Mark Spiteri Lucas Band and other well known singers such as Fabrizio and Claudia Faniello, J. Anvil, Ludvig Galea, Eleanor Cassar and Ivan Spiteri Lucas.
The festival also included the re-enactment of ‘Il-Qiegha’ by Tal-Qiegha Folk Foundation in Church Street, guided tours of the Historical Centre of Gharb and a children’s area with animators and a bouncing castle.
The Emergency Response and Rescue Corps provided First Aid and Ambulance Service coverage during the fifth edition of Seher il-Punent. Seher il-Punent.
The Gharb Local Council said it would like to thank all volunteers, local committees, sponsors and also the general public, who attending in such great numbers during Seher il-Punent.
This activity was held with the collaboration of the Ministry for Gozo, Parliamentary Secretariat for Consumers, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Dialogue and the Malta Tourism Authority.
