GTA survey indicates drop in trade during 1st quarterThe Gozo Tourism Association (GTA) has recently completed a survey amongst its members, who come from the following sectors: Hotels, self catering accommodation establishments, Restaurants, Diving, transport services, tourist attractions as well as DMC and tour agencies. The questions in the survey related to Gozitan tourist establishments’ performance during the first quarter of 2011 in these respective fields.

The survey, also covered the performance of these tourist establishments, during the Easter period, which normally marks the opening of the touristic season on the Island of Gozo.

47.7% of respondents termed the performance of their establishment during the first quarter of the year as ‘bad’, while 36.4% qualified their business performance as ‘fair’. Few establishments, representing 4.5% of those who replied, declared that the first quarter’s performance was ‘very good,’ while the remaining 11.4% stated that their business was ‘good.’

When asked how the business performed during the first quarter of 2011 when compared to the first quarter of 2010, 52.3% of the respondents classified their business performance as less than last year’s, while 31.8% declared that the establishments’ performance was on the same footing as 2010. 15.9% said that the January to March 2011 quarter, was better than the January to March 2010 quarter.

Another issue covered by the survey related to operations within the Easter 2011 period, which this year did not fall within the usual first quarter. Easter has become generally known as a very good season for the Gozitan tourism sector and is therefore looked forward to by all operators. This year’s Easter performance was rated as bad by 27.9% while more than a third, 34.9%,declared their establishments’ performance as fair, 30.2 % classed trade as good, while 7.% stated that it was very good.

The Gozitan tourism establishments were also asked to rate their Easter 2011 business performance, compared to Easter 2010. Almost 36.4% stated that they performed on an equal footing, while 18.2% rated their Easter performance as better than that for 2010. On the other hand 45.5% said their establishment’s performance was lower than Easter 2010.

The GTA said that it would like to thank its members from all sectors of the tourism industry in Gozo for their encouraging participation in this survey and said it intends to hold such surveys on a quarterly basis in order to get periodic snapshots of prevailing trends within the Gozitan tourism industry.
