Educational campaign on eco-Gozo during summer schoolAround 500 children from primary schools in Gozo are attending summer school within the Gozo College. The summer club in the Don Bosco Oratory, has been involved in an educational campaign related to the recognition and promotion of the cultural identity of Gozo, one of the measures within the action plan for eco-Gozo from 2010 to 2012.

The campaign included historical places and cultural issues as well as the natural habitats which are found around the island and gives Gozo its identity, as well as attracting tourists to the island. The campaign also focused on traditional rubble walls and the flora and fauna of the island.

An exhibition of the children’s projects made as a result of this campaign during the summer is now open. The projects undertaken in groups, included drawings, models, posters and other crafts on various topics that make Gozo a unique island. The topics included bees and honey, traditional rubble walls, the countryside, historic and cultural sites and traditional Gozitan food. The children also planted shrubs during the summer. The exhibition is being held in the foyer of the Oratory.

The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, visited Victoria Primary School and met with children who attend its summer school. She was able to view an exhibition of the childrens work that they had completed through the summer. This exhibtion will remain open until this coming Friday, the 26th of August. The Minister praised the students for their participation in the exhibition and said that through this initiative Gozitan children are better able to appreciate the historical and cultural heritage of the island. This means that from an early age children should recognise the importance of conservation and protection of this heritage. The Minister for Gozo concluded her visit by distributing certificates to each student who participated in this exhibition.

Sannat summer school has, for the first time this year been attended by nine persons with special needs.

Gozo Summer School opened in July and will run until the first week of September.
