An introductory meeting was organised for Gozitan students, who will this year begin courses at the University of Malta. The meeting was held at the exhibition hall of the Ministry for Gozo.
In her address to the students the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, urged them to collaborate with the Gozo University Group (GUG) and submit ideas, share problems and suggestions with them that they may be able to help with, thereby improving the life of students in Gozo. The Minister outlined the commitment of the Ministry for Gozo in aiding the educational sector on the island. The Minister expressed her satisfaction that more Gozitan students are choosing to continue their studies at university as well as in education and other training such as MCAST and ITS. The Minister urged current students to get involved in university organisations that give opportunities to broaden the socio-cultural perspectives in conjunction with academic learning. The Minister explained how besides the stipend given to each student on a national basis, the Ministry for Gozo offers additional assistance to Gozitan students to cover part of the study costs in Malta.
During the meeting representatives from GUG provided information on some aspects of the university life that these new students will experience in the coming weeks.
Students were also given information about applications that can be made to the Ministry for Gozo in respect of additional assistance to Gozitan students amounting to € 116.47 every three months in the case of University students in addition to other relief in respect of transport
More information about this can be obtained from the Ministry for Gozo, or from the stand during the activities GUG hold on the Campus of the University during the first week of the school year.
At the conclusion of the meeting the Gozo Minister presented GUG with the key to their new office which will be used members of the committee to hold its meetings.
