Xaghra Council delegation returns from fig festival in Italy

A delegation from Xaghra Local Council who attended for the figs festival in San Michele Salentino has just returned to Gozo. This is the second time that the Council was invited to participate in this festival which has a very prominent place in the annual cultural calendar of this locality in Italy.
The festival opened on Friday, the 26th of August 2011n with a show by the Xaghra Folk Group led by Mrs. Josephine Sultana. This show was accompanied by live folkloristic music and served as an opportunity for the local group to exhibit its talents in front of a foreign audience. The festival continued on Saturday with an interesting workshop, the theme of which was, ‘Cooperazione e Valorizzazione dei Prodotti Tipici: Proposte di promozione di modelli culturali alimentari’ and it was addressed by several Italian professors. In the evening, the main square of San Michele Salentino hosted the annual feast of fig-made products with the accompaniment of Italian folk groups. The visit of the Xaghra delegation in Italy reached its climax on Sunday, the 28th of August when, at 8.00pm, the Xaghra Local Council signed the first part of the twinning agreement with the Comune of San Michele Salentino. The second part of this ceremony will be held in Xaghra in October 2011.
Meanwhile, the Xaghra Local Council said it is continuing its preparations related to the organisation of the second figs festival, which is going to be held between Friday, the 7th and Sunday, the 9th ofOctober.
