Gieh Ghawdex Awards Ceremony & Jum Ghawdex ActivitiesThis year’s Gieh Ghawdex Awards Ceremony, being organised under the distinguished patronage of The President of Malta, will be held at Palazzo Palina – Hotel Ta’ Cenc, Sannat, on Friday, the 28th of October 2011, starting at 8.30pm.

The ‘Gieh Ghawdex’ award, now in its seventh year, was instituted by the Circolo Gozitano in 2005 as a means to honour personalities and/or organisations who through their work would have given an outstanding contribution to the socio- cultural and economic development of Gozo. The ‘Gieh Ghawdex’ is also awarded to individuals or organisations who have contributed to the preservation and promotion of Gozo’s distinct identity. The award is also bestowed on Gozitans who have attained national or international recognition as a result of a high level of accomplishment in their career. The Gieh Ghawdex event is supported by HSBC.

Soprano Claudia Tabone will participate in the event. Claudia Tabone, soprano, started her music education in her native Gozo at an early age and took up voice studies in Malta with mezzo-soprano Claire Massa. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Malta, she moved to Milan, Italy, to broaden her studies at the prestigious Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Verdi with Giovanna Canetti and is now under the direction of Juliette Bisazza. Meanwhile she attended master classes in Malta and Italy with important artists and coaches such as Carlo Ventura, Daniel Lichti, Thomas Bauer and Patrizia Morandini.

Claudia Tabone appears regularly in performance and has often been cast opposite artists of international repute, always attaining a good success with public and critics alike. Her stage and concert engagements have included Puccini’s La Bohème (Musetta), Bizet’s Carmen (Frasquita), Verdi’s Aïda (Sacerdotessa), Britten’s The Little Sweep (Rowan), Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (Spirit/Woman), Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël, Brahms’ Liebeslieder-Walzer, Henze’s Moralities, and a number of acclaimed Lieder and art song recitals in important venues in Malta. She was selected as soprano soloist for another performance of Brahms’ Liebeslieder-Walzer, this time at the notable Sala Verdi in Milan. Forthcoming engagements include Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater.
