Moviment Graffitti condemns Government’s trapping decisionMoviment Graffitti has said in a statement this evening that it “would like to express its disappointment with the decision that the government has taken, to open the season for bird trapping from the 1st of November to the 10th of January 2012. Although it is required under law to consult the Ornis Committee when it comes to opening the trapping season, no such recommendation was actually given by the committee.”

In addition, Moviment Graffitti said that “trapping is not even allowed under the Birds Directive and policy guidance on hunting and trapping states that the season can only open under derogation. However, this derogation can only be accepted if approved by the guidelines of the Birds Directive, when presented to the Ornis Committee for evaluation. Although, in August, the government had requested a scientific assessment in order to request a derogation, no such study was ever presented to the Ornis Committee.”

Moviment Graffitti continued by saying that it “criticises the government’s choice of disregarding the guidelines of the Birds Directive and opting for opening the trapping season, when the required legal notices were not issued. In June 2011, Malta had already been reprimanded for permitting trapping by the European Commission and faced proceedings for violating the terms issued by the Birds Directive.”

Moviment Graffitti went on to say that it “disapproves of the government’s decision to allow the opening of the trapping season from November 1st to January 10th, even though a similar decision taken last June, resulted in the government having to face legal proceedings against its actions. The decision to open the season once more, could easily result in a new case being opened against the government.”

“It is of great concern that the government is disregarding the directives that are set in place and allowing the trapping season to open. This blatant disregard of the guidelines issued by the Birds Directive shows, that the government is completely ignoring the issues of animal welfare and is instead focused on appearing amenable to the hunting and trapping enthusiasts.” Moviment Graffitti concluded that it “would like to restate its position, opposing the trapping and hunting of birds, in whatever circumstance. Moviment Graffitti believes that all animals should be given the protection that they deserve.”

This is a shocking thing that the government has done. They are ‘in bed’ with the hunters and trappers. When will the idiots in power realize that these disgusting practices do nothing to help the image of Malta abroad and damages the tourist industry. The whole thing smacks of the dark ages.
