A Gozitan police constable died this morning after his car fell into the sea at the No. 1 quay, in Cirkewwa whilst he was boarding the ferryboat.
The Armed Forces of Malta’s Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCC Malta) at Luqa Barracks was initially alerted by the Cirkewwa Police Station on the incident, which occurred before 05.55hrs. Immediately, RCC Malta dispatched to the scene an AFM Air Wing Alouette rescue-helicopter with its military divers onboard. An ambulance was also simultaneously dispatched from St. Paul’s Bay.
The AFM’s EOD diver who descended on the scene of the incident recuperated the vehicle’s driver, who was taken onboard the nearby AFM Maritime Squadron rescue-launch ‘Melita-1’.
The ambulance’s paramedics’ attempts to revive the vehicle’s driver were unfortunately unsuccessful.
