Victoria Council joins up with GreenPak for recyclable wasteVictoria and Mdina Local Councils are the latest additions to the MEPA authorised scheme GreenPak, which is operated by GreenPak Coop Society Ltd.

With a potential to recover 13 tonnes of recyclable waste per week, Victoria is currently only recovering 3 tonnes per week. Today Mdina only recovers 300kgs per week – a mere 15% from its potential of two tonnes of recyclable waste per week. As they have become part of GreenPak, the quantity collected is bound to increase.

The addition of Victoria together with the other Local Councils serviced by GreenPak in Gozo, GreenPak now covers the highest number of households in Gozo, making it the largest packaging recovery organization operating on the island.

Victoria and Mdina Local Councils have joined GreenPak to offer their residents a superior waste separation infrastructure within their respective communities. The separated materials are collected and sent for recycling, in a renewed drive towards an increase in the amount of packaging material recovered in a sustainable and reasonable way.

Ing Mario Schembri, CEO of GreenPak Coop, said, “We welcome the addition of these two historic cities. We are positive that both cities will see an increase in tonnage of recyclable waste within the first weeks.

This will directly contribute to enhance the image of the cities, and in turn increase the economic activity within these communities. Our expertise and services help localities achieve a higher and greener environmental performance.”

GreenPak has pledged itself to install new sets of recycling banks for plastic, metal, glass and paper which will be located in various areas around Victoria, as well as increase collections from shops and small businesses.

Furthermore, free recycling bags will be distributed to each household to encourage the popular scheme ‘Recycling on Tuesdays,’ while educational programmes will contribute in raising more awareness within the communities about the importance of recycling and the separation of waste.

GreenPak provides various benefits to Local Councils, from the provision of free GreenPak Recycling Bags to the Reward Reuse Recycle gift-scheme to the weekly award of €200 gift prize in the GreenPak Lottery.
