'Konkors Letteratura ghaz-Zghazagh' awards ceremonyThe award ceremony of the national competition Konkors Letteratura ghaz-Zghazagh (Literature for Youth) took place on Monday in the Music Room, at St James Cavalier, in the presence of Clyde Puli, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth and Sport, Miriam Teuma, Chief Executive Officer of Agenzija Zghazagh and Dr Gorg Mallia, Chairperson of the National Book Council.

During the ceremony the manuscript entitled Ossessjoni submitted by Carmel Scicluna and Bella, submitted by Rita Saliba, were both awarded first prize which consisted of a commemorative trophy, certificate of merit and a cash prize worth €1000 euro each. An additional prize was awarded to the participant whose age does not exceed 30 whilst scoring the highest points with the judges. This prize, which consisted of a cash prize of €500 and a certificate of merit was awarded to Andre’ Mangion for the book Tattoo.

In his speech, Clyde Puli expressed the importance of such initiatives as the Konkors Letteratura ghaz-Zghazagh, to serve as a platform for creativity amongst youth and to create a network of quality literature with young people as their target audience. Puli also spoke about the Secretariat’s plan to organise similar competitions that showcase the talent of our youth in various artistic genres.

This was the third edition of this national competition, which also offers financial support to the publishers who transform these manuscripts into books. To date manuscripts by Rita Saliba and Ivan Bugeja were published by Merlin Publishers and the book by Simon Bartolo was published by Klabb Kotba Maltin.

This year’s expert jury was composed by Dr Josette Attard, Keith Azzopardi and Sergio Grech. During the ceremony, extracts from the winning manuscripts were interpreted by students of the Malta Drama Centre and classic music pieces were performed by the Junior College Ensemble.
