Gharb hosts another successful edition of Seher il-Punent

Last weekend the locality of Gharb hosted the 6th edition of Seher il-Punent. The activities, which were held in the main square of Gharb, ‘Pjazza Zjara tal-Madonna,’ consisted of a variety of entertainment for all the family. The square has recently been paved as part of a restoration project.
The weekend’s festivities started on Friday morning with a conference about the OBIMED project which was held at the Gharb Council. This project is co-financed by the Europen Union under the Italia-Malta programme and aims to promote tourism between Malta and Sicily. After the conference, a lunch time concert, a duo for a celebration, Violin & Viola Recital I – Giambori Duo (UK/Canada) was held at Gharb Parish Church. This concert formed part of the Gaulitana Festival of Music.
The festival was officially opened on Friday evening by Mayor David Apap in the presence of the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono. Various representatives from some of the twinned towns were also present for the event. They were in Gozo to participate in a project co-funded by the EU with the theme of local traditions and crafts in an EU dimension.
Friday’s soiree was characterised by a traditional dinner and dancing, held by local organisations with the help of volunteers, the twinned towns representatives also joined in with the dinner, enabling them to sample traditional Maltese cooking and entertainment.
There were re-enactments by the Xaghra Historical Re-enactment Organisation and the first round of the tug of war competition was also held during the evening. 5 teams from different localities participated in this year’s competition.
On Saturday morning walking tours were held around places of historical and cultural interest. The evening was filled with a variety of performances by local talents.
One of the main attractions of Saturday’s entertainment was a 70s 80s 90s flashback concert by Ghaqda Muzikali Vizitazzjoni under the direction of Maestro George Apap with the participation of popular singers Debbie Scerri and Tenor Aldo Busuttil. A live concert was also performed by New Cuori.
Seher il-Punent was chosen to be part of the this year’s Malta Tourism Authority’s fireworks international symposium with a spectacular air and ground fireworks display held on Saturday evening.
As Sunday was the last day of the festival, it was packed with activities throughout the day. With historical re-enactments in the morning and the production of the largest gbejna, followed by a chance to taste some of last year’s. This year’s gbejna weighed 104 kilos which beat last year’s by 27 kilos.
A motorcycle show and get together was also held in the morning. Activities reached their peak in the evening when the festival concluded with the tug of war finals and a show by the cast of the popular TV programme Déjà vu.
This event was organised by the Gharb Local Council with the collaboration of the Ministry for Home and Parliamentary Affairs, the Ministry for Gozo and the Malta Tourism Authority.
The Council said it “would like to thank all those who contributed in any way towards the successful outcome of the festival, including sponsors, volunteers and the general public who attended in large numbers for this event.” The Council also confirmed that the festival, which has now become an integral part of the locality’s cultural calendar, will be repeated next year.
