A vehicle that arrived last week from Sicily and which was carrying foodstuffs of several traders was followed, and during the investigations, a total of 100kg of fresh vegetable salads and 172.8kg ready made sandwiches were witheld and later destroyed, due to inadequate temperature.
This took place following intensive investigations carried out last week by the Port Health Services, which is a unit within the Directorate, in a joint exercise with Customs Department, Veterinary Services, VAT Department and assisted by the Police and Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority.
The Health Inspectorate Services within the Environmental Health Directorate of the Superintendence of Public Health said that it would like to remind food business operators on their duty to control their suppliers and perform suitable ‘goods inwards checks’ and not to accept any foodstuffs that may have been rendered unfit for human consumption by the interuption of the cold chain, amongst others possible abuse.
