Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz staff volunteer clean upAfter joining ‘The Green Inspiration by Kempinski’ earlier this year, the Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz staff organised a cleanup at the San Lawrenz locality with the collaboration of the local council. Being part of the Green Inspiration organisation, the hotel has created a team of staff members and a hotel mascot who can all easily interact and implement initiatives put together by the group. Therefore, continuously meeting and exceeding their guests expectations of operational and environmental sustainability.

The clean up took place on a nice sunny but cool day in October, the volunteers met up with Mr Anthony Formosa, the Mayor of San Lawrenz, who thanked them for their kind gesture to help out in the locality, he also pointed out the location on the outskirts San Lawrenz which many local people unfortunately still use as a dumping site, even though the council offers weekly services for such waste collections.

As the volunteers made their way way to this area, they remarked that they were astonished with the marvellous scenery and landscapes which unfortunately we all too often take for granted every day. The volunteers were shocked at the amount of dumped material which spoilt such a lovely spot and. after a very busy hour cleaning up, a total of 420 kg was collected from just one road.

Astounded by the sight of how much waste had been collected, the volunteers all asked the very same question….. Why?

Why did God grant us life on mother earth and yet we still find a way to kill her slowly?

Why we are taught every day at school and work how to recycle and yet we still end up doing the opposite?

Well, the Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz decided to say… Why not do something about it!

”If one way be better than another, that you may be sure is Nature’s way”…Aristotle.

After one year living in Gozo and daily astounded by the volume of dumping vaste I wrote TWICE to Mrs Debono and to Mr Borg describing a concept of permanent cleaning up in Gozo with a small team of workers. The financial basis should be a small part of the budget of the 14 communities of Gozo. A small island like Gozo should be held easily clean. I never got any answer. It seems like it is easier to SPEAK about the clean enviroment for politicans than to TAKE the smallest thing to realize it.

The island is a pigsty wherever you look and please don’t tell me it is the tourists – how many tourists does one see carrying washing machines on their backs or old car seats!? It is disgusting considering the wonderful FREE household and bulky garbage, recycling, and skip service that exists here!

However, I do concede that there is a dire lack of garbage bins in public areas such as It-Tokk.

I do not know why we have to talk about those actions .
It has to be normally !
But thanks for the cleaning .

Unfortunately – Sometimes we all have to take responsibility for picking up other peoples rubbish!

On a small scale when you go for a walk take a plastic bag with you and pick up any rubbish that you are able too disposing of it properly on your return and if you see large items of fly tipping make a note and report it to the authorities.
