Recently, the Health and Safety Department at the Sir M. A. Refalo Centre for Further Studies in Victoria, Gozo, organised two educational talks as part of its holistic learning programme.
In the first talk, health and safety teachers Mr Andrew Dimech and Mr Charles Daniel Saliba introduced Police Drug Squad Sergeant Jason Caruana, who spoke about the dangers of drugs. Mr Caruana showed the audience different types of drugs and explained their effects. He also gave the students of some examples of young people who became hooked on drugs and ended up miserable and in some cases had died. The second talk was on substance abuse and was organised with the collaboration of Ms Pamela Aquilina, an anti-substance abuse teacher in Gozo. In her lecture Ms Aquilina spoke about alcohol, cigarette and drug addictions. She also showed videos related to these themes, which proved to be big eye-openers to the young adults.
The next health and safety activity is an out-of-school activity. It will be held at the Civil Protection Department centre in Xewkija, Gozo, where the students will attend a lecture on domestic firefighting and then have hands-on experience in firefighting.
Photographs show Ms Aquilina and Sergeant Caruana during their lecture.
