Car Free Day events taking place in Ghajnsielem villageAs part of the Annual Car Free Day initiative, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority and the Tourism and Sustainable Development Unit within the Office of the Prime Minister which together form part of an inter-ministerial committee consisting of the representatives of key Government ministries and authorities, have joined forces to organise nation-wide activities that will aim to raise awareness on the benefits of reducing traffic on Malta’s roads.

The campaign included a competitive call open to all Local Councils and Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), where each council was given the opportunity to submit proposals for events to be organised on the day.

The proposals had to include an environmental, cultural or social theme. The Ghajnsielem Local Council was chosen as having one of the best five proposals of the event proposed.

One of the activites organised is aimed at breaking the record for the longest washing line. Everyone is being asked to contribute garments that can be held by pegs on a line that will wind around the streets of Ghajnsielem.

Any garment no longer required will be to charity after the event. Everybody who takes part in the record breaking attempt will be given a certificate of participation.

This activity will be held by the Ghajnsielem Local Council and the major organizations of the village. For more information please contact the Local Council on 21561515.

The car-free day event will take place on Sunday, the 22nd of September between 9.00am and 4.00pm and included a childrens fun fair, sports, entertainment and games activities among others.

The campaigns aims to:

• promote the use of public transport as a convenient and as a viable alternative to private cars;

• instil an awareness of the negative effects of excessive dependence on car transportation;

• encourage a shift in public attitude towards alternative, more environmentally -conscious forms of mobility and

• show that a reduction in cars traffic can bring tangible benefits in terms of air quality and a reduction in noise pollution and congestion.
