The Ministry of Health said this afternoon that it “will continue to improve the service to patients in Gozo by opening a Day Care Ward at the end of this year. This service will reduce the problem of the acute shortage of beds in hospital wards, particularly the female and male general wards, which suffer from overcrowding.”
Day Care services are to include endoscopy, colorectal Cancer Screening, as well as any operation or intervention where the patient does not require an overnight stay.
“The Day Care Ward will also host a Gozo Chemotherapy Lounge where those who normally would attend Boffa Hospital for chemotherapy will be able to receive this treatment in Gozo, causing less stress and suffering, as well as saving on travel expenses, both for the patient as well as relatives,” the Ministry said.
It added, that operating sessions have been introduced in the afternoon in order to recduce wating times, focusing on endoscopy. The Ministry said that to achieve this goal, extra nurses were allocated to this department, resulting in three operating theaters to function at the same time, both morning and afternoon.
“To make all this happen, and to fill any other nursing vacancies, including in the emergency and renal unit, eighteen nurse currently working Malta, will in the coming days, be given the opportunity to work in Gozo,” the Ministry said.
