On the occasion of Jum il-Belt Victoria, which falls on the 10th of June, the Victoria Local Council is organising a number of activities in commemoration of the 126th anniversary of the conferral of the City Status to Rabat.
It was on this very day, in 1887, that a Government Notice announced that Her Majesty Queen Victoria had been graciously pleased to consent to the town of Rabat being officially declared a City and its name changed into Victoria, as a lasting remembrance of the fiftieth anniversary of her accession to the throne of the British Empire.
In celebration, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will be presenting a grand concert of Spectacular Symphonic Classics – ‘Classical Gems,’ in Independence Square, Victoria, Gozo, in front of the historic Banca Giuratale, which is nowadays the official seat of the Victoria Local Council.
The concert will take place on Sunday, the 8th of June, starting at 8.00pm. Entrance to the concert is free and everyone is invited to attend.
The programme for the evening is as follows:
Wagner Overture from Meistersingers
Khatchaturian Adagio from Spartacus
Tchaikovsky Waltz of the Flowers from Nutcracker
Tchaikovsky Capriccio Italiano
Ponchielli Danza delle Ore
Wagner Grand March from Tannhauser
Malta Philharmonic Orchestra – Leader Marcelline Agius and conductor Joseph Vella.
