NGOs present a common front in their environmental activities - CacopardoCarmel Cacopardo, Deputy Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika-The Green Party, speaking about World Environment Day, which is commemorated on the 5th of June, lauded environmental NGOs “which, during the past twelve months, sought to present a common front in their environmental activities.”

“It was very satisfying,” stated Cacopardo, “that for the first time ever, a substantial number of environmental NGOs joined Alternattiva Demokratika in setting up the Coalition for the Abolition of Spring Hunting calling for an abrogative referendum such that decisions which Parliament has failed to take in the past years will be acted upon by the electorate through the use of its vote in a referendum.”

“During the coming months, added Cacopardo, “this coordinated activity has to intensify due to the fact that Government is continuously manifesting its lack of sensitivity towards its international obligations towards biodiversity through its intention to permit once more permit bird trapping.”

Cacopardo stated, “no one should be afraid when confronted with an anti-democratic attitude which is seeking to severely curtail the right to hold an abrogative referendum.”

Carmel Cacopardo concluded by stating that Alternattiva Demokratika is “proud that during its 25 years of existence it has been the only political party in Malta which has expressed itself and acted on these matters.”
