The New Year’s 2015 Gozo-Rocks Ultimate challenge hike, organised by Louis Debattista of the Gozo Greyhounds Sports Club, came to a successful end on Saturday. The third hike completed Gozo’s perimeter, covering 18 km in 4 hours and 4 minutes.
Louis said that It was windy “but these Gozo Gladiators went along with the Gozo Greyhounds for the challenge. There were 15 of us, including three young hikers 7, 10 and 14 years old. Thanks to everyone who made it on the last day of the 3 day challenge hike.”
“Sadly towards the end of the hike we came to an area covered with garbage,” Louis pointed out, “Why dump it here when we have the free Civic Amenities Site to use in Xewkija? Or leave it at your doorstep for garbage collection! We need fines, signs and penalties to enforce no dumping/littering laws. Maybe violators could be required to do clean up!”
Louis said that on a more happy note, “we had a great time hiking together along Gozo’s coast, great conversations, good company, spectacular scenery. I encourage Gozitans to get out and enjoy our beautiful island.”
He is urging everyone now to get ready for the next challenge hike being organised. “I’d like to cover Gozo in 2 days: Mgarr heading east initially towards Qala and continuing to Dwerja. The second hike would begin in Dwerja continuing counterclockwise back to Mgarr.”
Louis said that each hike will be approximately 7 hours, and 21km. “I’d like this to be a charity hike to raise funds for the Alive Foundation, so any donations would be appreciated – this is the 7-day 1000km cycling challenge I’m doing, beginning the 7th of July, raising money for children with cancer.” More details on this hike will given in the future.
