The Education Ministry and the Chamber of SMEs, and the GRTU, have this morning presented a compensation agreement over smart card machines for vendors who purchased their POS system to be able to cater for the Student Maintenance Grant system, the smart card, in 2013 and 2014.
Following the smart card reform, the GRTU raised a number of concerns to the Ministry in representation of its members who invested hundreds of euros for machines which, through the reform, are no longer needed.
The Minister at the time, agreed to hold discussions with the GRTU on how to compensate these businesses.
Over the past months a number of meetings were held between the Ministry and the GRTU, and an agreement was reached.
The agreement states that a €300 sum is to be offered as compensation for each machine that local businesses have purchased in 2013. This sum increases to €400 for those machines purchased in 2014.
Businesses which fall within these criteria are requested to contact the GRTU to apply for this.
