In his concluding message on the final day of the Local council election campaign, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, Prof. Arnold Cassola, said, “we are presenting candidates in the Local Councils of H’Attard, St. Paul’s Bay, Haz-Zebbug, St. Julian’s, Qala, Hal Qormi and Nadur.
“Alternattiva Demokratika councillors will work in their Council to ensure that we have more investment for cultural activities and in public libraries, for the protection of open spaces, with better accessibility for the elderly, persons with disabilities and parents with young children. Increasing road space for cyclists and improving facilities for pedestrians should be a top priority for our councillors,” he said.
“AD councillors will spur their councils to be more pro-active where waste is concerned. Therefore, as AD we are saying that apart from recycling waste, there can be a wider recycling policy. A local plan is needed for the management of waste based on the national plan which sets as its target a zero waste society by 2050.”
Prof. Cassola added, “of course, in order to make things work more efficiently, it is necessary that, without introducing any new taxes, more money is provided for the Councils. We are proposing that a percentage of trading licences, of permits to occupy public spaces, such as restaurants, of car licences and of the plastic bag tax go to the local community because it is these local communities that have to maintain roads and pavements in good shape.”
“The election of AD councillors will not bring about miracles but will ensure commitment, seriousness and transparency and will be a guarantee of innovative and fresh ideas,” Prof- Cassola concluded.
