ERRC lifeguards assist 2 injured men at the Blue Lagoon in CominoYesterday, Gozo’s Emergency Response & Rescue Corps lifeguards, stationed at the Blue Lagoon in Comino, assisted two men in separate incidents, a Maltese and an Italian, who were both in their 60s.

The first accident, happened at around 1pm, when lifeguards were alerted that there was an injured man on a boat at the Crystal Lagoon. The casualty, a Maltese man, was treated for suspected fractures to his leg as well as back injuries, which were caused after he slipped.

The second accident happened at the Blue Lagoon, when an Italian man fell into a one metre deep hole, falling over sharp rocks. He suffered laceration wounds below his knee, injuries to the head as well as other minor wounds to his body.

The ERRC said that in both cases, lifeguards transported the casualties with hydroambulance Lifesaver 1 to Mgarr Harbour, from where they were transported by ambulance to the Gozo General Hospital for further treatment.

Last week, the lifeguards of the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps assisted a number of tired swimmers at the Blue Lagoon in Comino. To date the ERRC said that its lifeguards intervened in more than 300 cases in total, at the Blue Lagoon and Santa Marija Bay in Comino and Marsalforn and Hondoq Bay in Gozo.

These ranged from jellyfish stings, tired swimmers, fractures, provision of assistance to search for a missing person. 81 of the cases above involved assistance to tired swimmers.

The lifeguarding service at the Blue Lagoon in Comino is possible due to financial support from the Malta Tourist Authority. Support is also being provided by the Ministry for Gozo, Mgarr Marina, Transport Malta, Police, Armed Forces of Malta, and the Civil Protection Department.
