“The water is, undoubtedly, one of the most fundamental resources for this island and to its inhabitants,” said the Minister for Gozo Dr Anton Refalo during a visit to Ghar llma in Santa Lucija, Kercem.
The Minister spoke to the Skolasajf students who were on a visit to this important site, and encouraged them to cherish the value of water, saying that this message should also be repeated and practiced in their own homes. Dr Refalo urged the students to encourage a positive change in Malta and Gozo, by using water wisely and in a sustainable way.The Minister recalled how a few months ago he visited this educational project which was initiated by the HSBC Water Programme – ‘Catch the Drop Campaign.’
Ghar llma reservoir was built by the British between 1839 and 1843, it fed the water gallery leading to the aqueduct, parts of which can still be seen on the road from Victoria. They enabled a supply of fresh water to flow between Santa Lucija and the population of Victoria. Eventually this led to water source which was located in Savina Square, Victoria.
During this summer Skolasajf children are visiting this site to better understand about how our ancestors were able to harvest the water and better appreciate the value and importance of water.
