This Sunday, Team Greens will host their annual club race at Xaghra. The GO Gozo Classic will run in its fourth edition and it is set to attract Malta's top cyclists across the channel.
The Xaghra circuit offers a unique experience to athletes and spectators alike as it is the only race in the national calendar that passes through a village centre, bringing the action close to the public. Xaghra Local council has embraced this sporting event in their annual calendar whilst GO has again committed support for this year's edition.
Team Greens will come out in full force to defend their victory obtained by Etienne Bonello last year, however they have more than one shot in their barrel with the likes of Christian Formosa, Jeffrey Borg, Alessio Galuppo and Bonello in the Elite category. Greens will also field a strong lineup for the Masters race with Joe Bonello, Reuben Colombo, Colin Tabone and Michael Camilleri who is fresh from a stage win at the Tour of Malta.
Tour ta' Malta runner up Michelle Vella Wood and Danica Bonello Spiteri will challenge for the overall results in the ladies race which for the first time will have a separate start from the men's race and a longer distance.
In a comment just a few days before the event race director Mr Frank Dimech explained what the tasks behind organising such an important event were.
"It has been a very busy few weeks to coordinate all the permits, logistics and sponsors. Each year we try to improve on the previous edition. We are extremely delighted and proud that GO plc has put their trust into our organisation and that is quite a feat for our sport. It will be the first race in the Cycling Federation calendar to be timed electronically where each bike will have a transponder for accurate and in real time results. We are sure that our hard work will eventually pay off come Sunday. It should be a tremendous day of sport for both athletes and spectators," concluded Dimech.
Team Greens would like to inform the general public that the road leading to Xaghra from Victoria will be closed this Sunday between 9:30am and 12:00pm.
