Speaking at a news conference in Ghajnsielem today, the Leader of the Nationalist Party Simon Busuttil presented its Manifesto for Gozo with 100 proposals for the island.
The Nationalist Party, he said, is the first political party to present an electoral manifesto for Gozo
Simon Busuttil stated that this demonstrates the commitment of the PN that Gozo is no longer only the last chapter of the electoral manifesto, but given the attention it really deserves.
He said that the consultation on the proposals submitted by the Nationalist Party was opened in January to gather serious solutions from Gozo itself.
Simon Busuttil mentioned some of the proposals from the 100 listed in the document, which he said, must attest special political commitment:
He said that a new Nationalist Government would give Gozo recognition as an island region in the Constitution of Malta. He added that this is not a symbolic gesture, “but it is a commitment that must protect and enhance the particular identity of Gozo.” Thanks to this step, he said, Gozo could apply for a special package of funds from the European Union totalling up to € 250 million.
The Head of the Nationalist Party reiterated its commitment to the Gozo General Hospital being returned to Gozo.
Simon Busuttil said that, “while the Nationalist Party believes in private hospitals, it does not agree with the privatisation of the only state hospital in Gozo.” He continued that a Nationalist Government would not only gives back the Gozo Hospital, but also increase investment in services.
“The Nationalist Party would start work immediately on the permanent link between Gozo and Malta,” Busuttil said. “This project will open new opportunities for Gozo and will give a new dimension to the national territory.” The Head of the Nationalist Party said, “Joseph Muscat wasted four years on the project for a permanent link and only now are the geological studies being made.”
Simon Busuttil said the PN devised a plan to introduce new stimulus for Gozo to attract more investment and young people. He said a new Nationalist Government will offer incentives to new businesses opening in Gozo of income tax exemption for three years, up to a maximum of € 200,000.
“Continuing with the same vision,” said Simon Busuttil, the Nationalist Party proposes a grant scheme of € 10,000 to help Gozitan couples start their family life in Gozo, while completely eliminating stamp duty on the purchase of their first property in Gozo.
Regarding infrastructure, the PN Leader said that a Nationalist Government will launch a new investment programme for both arterial and residential roads.
He said he will rebuild Gozo’s main arterial roads – Marsalforn- Victoria, Nadur-Victoria, Xaghra- Victoria and Zebbug-Victoria, with an investment of € 65 million. Together with this, Busuttil said, the current budget of € 1 million for roads will increase to € 4 million a year to improve residential roads.
Simon Busuttil said that, a PN Government would also invest in family parks in Gozo and said that it undertakes to allocate € 4 million for public spaces.
