Malta Sports Journalists Executive meet with the Minister for GozoMinister for Gozo Justyne Caruana met with the newly elected executive committee of the Malta Sports Journalists Association, during a meeting held at the Ministry.

Dr Caruana congratulated the new President of the Association Sandro Micallef. He replaces Charles Camenzuli who held the post for the past 14 years and has now been elected in his new role as AIPS Europe President and AIPS Vice President during the 80th AIPS Congress in South Korea.

Topics discussed during this visit, included Gozo being advertised as a sports tourism destination, both for local associations as well as at international level. Minister Caruana stressed the unwavering commitment of the Ministry for Gozo to publicise the island internationally in this regard in order to develop this tourism niche.

Justyne Caruana went on to say that there should be broader discussions with all stakeholders concerned in order to attract more sports tourism to the island. “The focus should not remain on just one particular sport, but on a wide range of sports,” the Minister said.

She added that the Government plans to strengthen sports facilities on the island. “Gozo has the potential to attract international events, and the Sports Journalists Association has an important role in this regard.”

Sandro Micallef congratulated Minister Caruana on her new role and promised all possible support to achieve the objectives being proposed by the Ministry for Gozo.

The Secretary of the Club Mark Mizzi remarked that Gozo offers several advantages, “it is well equipped with facilities (and there is also a view that they are improving and increasing) and an attractive climate.

Dr Caruana reiterated that both the Ministry for Gozo,, as well as members of the Sports Journalists Association have the same ideas and vision for sports in Gozo.

She said that, “with maximum commitment from all entities concerned, we can together attract more business and sporting events to the island.
