NTM welcomes response by schools against use of single use plasticsNature Trust – FEE Malta, in a statement, has said that it pleased to note the response by schools against the implementation of the new milk and fruit distribution scheme.

Many schools have spoken out about the scheme on the grounds of the vast amount of waste generated, from the excessive use of single use plastic, in particular the straws issued with the milk cartons.

NTM pointed out that the vast majority of these schools are Eco-Schools, and are by default committed towards waste reduction practices.

The NGO said that this type of scheme “conflicts directly with student driven actions in schools aimed at actively reducing the generation of waste.”

“Puttinu Cares, a few weeks ago, pioneered a new strategy that replaces unsustainable practices with solutions that are sensitive to the environment and thus promote an improved quality of life,” said NTM.

After inviting students from EkoSkola to propose alternatives to balloon releases, Puttinu Cares chose a sustainable solution to the issue.

Nature Trust – FEE Malta said that it would like to extend its support to authorities in the resolution of this issue, adding that it is “confident that sustainable solutions can be found with enough commitment from the parties involved.”

The NGO suggested that EkoSkola students can be asked to propose ideas how this service can still be provided without creating a negative impact on our environment.

Nature Trust – FEE Malta is the Local FEE Representative in Malta running the programmes Eco Schools, Young Reporters for the Environment, Learning About Forests, Blue Flag and Green Key.
