For the 10th consecutive year, Xewkija square will be the venue for the two-day cultural event for all the family – Fior D’Argenta, which opens tomorrow, organised by the Local Council – A festival of culture, history, drama and traditions.
This event commemorates the Beheading of St John the Baptist, to whom the Rotunda church is dedicated and is celebrated by the local community on the feast day of the 29th of August.
Details of the event were given during a press conference attended by the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana, Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Clint Camilleri, and Xewkija Mayor Paul Azzopardi.
Minister Caruana said that this activity is intended to promote and highlight this Xewkija Feast that was once popular, but now almost forgotten – The martyrdom of John the Baptist.
Fior D’Argenta will see the revival of many elements and features, which in the past formed part of everyday life, including typical food made from figs and elements of a traditional holiday among others, showcasing everything that the beautiful village of Xewkija has to offer, said Dr Caruana. Information on services provided by the Ministry for Gozo will also be available.
The Minister also mentioned that in the coming weeks Xewkija will benefit from the revitalisation of the village square and surrounding streets, through an investment being made by the Ministry for Gozo.
Parliamentary Secretary Clint Camilleri, congratulated the Council on the event, and noted that activities such as these serve as a platform to showcase the products of our island.
He added that these activities in our towns and villages foster awareness about the Maltese natural product, not only among locals, but also with the many tourists who visit the islands.
Mayor Paul Azzopardi, thanked the Minister for Gozo for the Ministry’s sponsorship of the event and Parliamentary Secretary Clint Camilleri for the collaboration and assistance.
The Mayor said that Fior D’Argenta – is taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday, the 28th and 29th of August, in St John the Baptist Square, as well as the surrounding areas.
