The official launch of this year’s Qala International Folk Festival took place during a press conference with the Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana and Qala Mayor Paul Buttigieg.
Taking place next weekend, the Festival will provide visitors with music, dance, traditional food and colourful costumes, and is organised by the Qala Local Council and the Qala Menhir Folk Group.
Dr Caruana said that folk is a cultural aspect that falls in with the Ministry’s objectives for Gozo – seeking to preserve and promote cultural and historical heritage – characteristics that form a distinct identity for the island of Gozo.
Qala, over the next weeks will be hosting two major cultural events – The Qala International Folk Festival and Gozo Feast, both initiatives benefiting from Ministry for Gozo funds, the Minister said.
Qala Mayor Paul Buttigieg said that this 13th edition of the Festival will see the participation of three guest foreign folk groups, from Russia, Ireland and Italy, together with the Qala Menhir Folk Group.
He thanked the Minister for Gozo for the “substantial support” shown towards this activity and encouraged the public to attend.
A firm favourite on the Gozo cultural calendar, the Festival is taking place over three days, between Friday, the 21st and Sunday, the 23rd of September, when the village of Qala, will be transformed into a hub of folk activities that give visitors an insight into the island’s cultural history.
The Festival’s intercultural programme has grown to attract locals and visitors who enjoy this different and enjoyable spectacle.
