Exploring the Phoenician Shipwreck off XlendiOpening tomorrow – Exploring the Phoenician Shipwreck off Xlendi – is a new Heritage Malta exhibition being held at the Citadel, Gozo.

The exhibition will highlight discoveries from this innovative underwater project. The discovery of the galley was announced in 2014 it was found about a mile off the coast of Gozo, belonging to the Phoenician Period, dating back to 700 BC.

Exploring the Phoenician Shipwreck off Xlendi will showcase some of the innovative techniques used as well as stories of trade, exchange, production and consumption in the Archaic Mediterranean.

For over 10 years, The University of Malta, in collaboration with a number of partners, has used state of the art technologies to study and explore one of the most exciting underwater archaeological discoveries in the Central Mediterranean.

A number of objects recovered from 110 meters below the surface will also be on display, whilst audiovisual aids will help transport the viewer into an underwater world of historical discovery.

This exhibition is taking pace in collaboration with the University of Malta, and with the support of the Ministry for Gozo, Malta Tourism Authority, Malta International Airport and the Honor Frost Foundation.

It opens tomorrow, Saturday, the 22nd of September and continues until the 31st of August 2019, at Heritage Malta’s Gozo Area Office, Exhibition Hall, St Martin’s Quarter Street, Cittadella.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8.00am till 4.00pm. Admission free of charge.
