This year is the 400th anniversary of the 1618 St Mary’s Tower on Comino and Din l-Art Helwa will be marking this special celebration with an open weekend this coming Saturday and Sunday, the 29th and 30th of September.
Din l-Art Helwa has organised a weekend programme for everyone to enjoy, such as living history displays by the Historic Reenactment Group of Malta and much more.
DLH volunteers will also be on-hand during the weekend to give guided tours between 11am and 6pm.
With its 360 degree view over the Gozo Channel and the breathtaking sight directly over the Blue Lagoon, a trip to the roof is definitely worth the visit.
This imposing Coastal Tower was built to strengthen the defence of the Gozo Comino channel during the reign of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt.
DLH said that it is thought its design was by VIttorino Cassar, the son of Gerolamo Cassar, the architect who was responsible for the building of Valletta.
Admission is free to these family action packed days but Din l-Art Helwa will be grateful for donations to the upkeep of the tower.
Public ferries to Comino run from Mgarr, Cirkewwa or Marfa.
