There is an old saying “like father, like son.” The famous Gozitan sculptor Giuseppi Agius 1893-1948 (l-brejbex) has quite a few statues carved in limestone around Gozo, among them is the Statue of St George, situated on the corner of Library street and St George’s street, known as San Gorg tal-Hagar, 1925.His son Carmelo used to do wood creation/painting with festa decorations. Raymond is the son of Carmelo and grandson of Giuseppi Agius, and he is keeping up the family tradition of fine artwork in its different forms.
Raymond said that during his spare time he loves to do voluntary work – the art of embroidery using gold threads. At the moment he is working on a beautiful red velvet cloth with gold embroidery.
He explained that this intricately designed curtain is shortly going to replace the old one on the tabernacle of the main altar at the chapel at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Xewkija, Gozo.
Like father, like son, and so the work of this family of artists continues…..
