Arbor Day has been celebrated by the Friendly School of San Lawrenz with a series of activities. During the run-up to the day itself pupils were encouraged to carry out research about about trees.
Through this they learnt about the dangers of the introduction of alien species and how to take care of trees in general. Pupils also sowed seeds of indigenous trees.
The school said that this year, the 91st anniversary since the first Arbor Day was celebrated in Gozo, special emphasis was put on the need to conserve soil and the need to prevent it being washed away down to the sea during heavy rains
To this end, the soil used for the potting of the seeds was collected from valleys, close to the sea as a way to emphasise the need to clean and maintain the holding dams found in Wied il-Kbir, in Dwejra and other valleys around Gozo.
San Lawrenz Primary School said that being surrounded with countryside and trees it is the ideal place where pupils can come into contact with nature, allowing them to develop skills which complement the academic ones.
