Newly licenced vehiclesThe stock of licensed motor vehicles rose by 503 in the fourth quarter of 2008, to stand at 294,658.

As at the end of December 2008, the stock of licensed motor vehicles stood at 294,658. Of these, 75.6 per cent were private vehicles while commercial vehicles accounted for 16.4 per cent.

New licences

New licences issued during the fourth quarter of 2008 amounted to 2,897. Private vehicles accounted for 1,887 new licences, or 65.1 per cent of the total. In the reference quarter, the majority of new licences were issued to private vehicles falling within ‘Class 1’ (<1300 cc). This class accounted for 918 licences, while vehicles in ‘Class 2’ (1301-1449 cc) accounted for 217. Newly-licensed ‘new’ motor vehicles amounted to 1,221, or 42.1 per cent of the total, while newly-licensed ‘used’ motor vehicles amounted to 1,676.

Exported, scrapped and garaged

In the fourth quarter of 2008, 33 vehicles were exported. Scrapped vehicles numbered 784 of which nearly 62 per cent were ‘Class 1’ private cars (<1300 cc). In the quarter under review, 2,150 vehicles were garaged. This means that as at end December 2008, garaged vehicles accounted for just over 68.0 per cent of total vehicles that are no longer on the road.

Annual perspective

In 2008, newly licensed vehicles totalled 13,096 – 6,944 new and 6,152 used vehicles – an increase of 507 vehicles or 4.0 per cent over 2007. Exported and scrapped vehicles amounted to 86 and 2,694 respectively, while 5,938 vehicles were garaged. Therefore, in 2008, 8,718 vehicles were removed from the roads.
