The Ministry for the Family, Children’s Rights and Social Solidarity and the Ministry for Gozo organised a conference dealing with the problem of homelessness.
The Minister Caruana announced that the Ministry would be embarking on an ambitious project to build a social housing block of new apartments in Gozo, the first one for several years.
This conference was a continuation of a similar one which was organised by the Foundation for Social Welfare Services (Asylum Seekers) in November last year.
The Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana said that “although there are no people who are considered homeless in Gozo, we still find difficulties and inadequate housing in which people can live.”
In addition to a new social housing block, the Minister said that there is a need for synergy between the various bodies responsible for social protection, in order to be more effective and fast in their interventions and assistance.
“Although there are several services, the entities must be quick in their response, through cooperation and coordination between them, for the benefit of vulnerable persons,” stressed Minister Caruana.
The Minister for the Family, Children’s Rights and Social Solidarity Michael Falzon, said that this government has a “direct commitment to the field of social housing.”
The Minister also spoke on the White Paper for Rent Reform, and how it will lead to more long-term stability, and protect both owners and those who are renting.
He said that the government will make a radical change in aid so that the rental market is more affordable. This aid will vary from a maximum of € 3,000 to € 5,000 per year depending on family circumstances.
CEO of FSWS Alfred Grixti, said that the Foundation for Social Welfare Services, as the national agency, agreed with the Ministry’s vision for Gozo, which is why the necessary investment in human resources was made, and services offered by the FSWS in Malta are now also available in Gozo.
