Wirt Ghawdex to carry out geological and 3-D scanning studies on Calypso CavePreliminary geological and 3-D scanning studies are to be carried out on the Ulysees Cave in Xaghra. The project was given the go-ahead to Wirt Ghawdex by the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana last month.

Wirt Ghawdex said that Phase 1 in the rehabilitation of Calypso Cave will be setting out a plan for the shoring up of the badly deteriorating cave, making it safe to once again welcome visitors.

The NGO’s role is to commission the right experts to carry out this phase of the project and said that once again they will be working with Architect Hermann Bonnici and Archaeologist Rodney Xerri, both experts in their fields. Wirt Ghawdex preliminary geological and 3-D scanning studies on Calypso CaveWirt Ghawdex added that their work will be completed by the issuance of a planning application and all reports and information to enable the Ministry for Gozo to issue the necessary tenders.

The completed project will ensure the cave will not end up crumbling into the sea and that it can be saved and enjoyed by all, said Wirt Ghawdex.

According to legend Gozo was Homer’s isle of Ogygia, where the nymph Calypso held the Greek hero Odysseus as her “prisoner of love” for seven years.

It was also believed that Calypso Cave contained a complex labyrinth that extended all the way down to sea level in some areas, however currently the cave is inaccessible to the public due to rock fall.
