Gozo Sports Awards Finals celebrating sports personaltiesThe finals evening of the fifth edition of the Gozo Sports Awards was held on Saturday, with 46 nominations received in 14 different discipline, and competing in nine categories.

This annual event is organised by the Gozo Sports Board within the Ministry for Gozo and was held under the auspices of the Minister for Gozo, Dr Justyne Caruana.

The jury, which was composed of 11 people selected from disciplines, had a tough task to chose the winners, where even the finalists had to be reduced from 46 to 42, the Gozo Sports Board said.

The only four awards presented by the Gozo Sports Board directly were to, Alvin Scicluna in recognition of an eventful career in Gozo sports, both as an athlete and as currently the producer of two television programmes on sport in Gozo. Frankie Muscat, former football player and athlete was presented with the 60+ award. Guzeppina Galea was presented with a special prize for the Special Olympics, and this year there was also a special prize for a Gozo sporting family, this was won by the Xuereb family, with mother, father, son and daughter all involved in some sort of sport in Gozo, including motocross.

Winners of the greatest honours were Felicienne Mercieca, winning the award for the second time and Gozitan and Maltese Champion Charlton Debono, who has won the award for the past four consecutive years.

In her address, the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana congratulated all the winners and reiterated that the Ministry will give its full commitment to supporting the improvement of existing sporting facilities as well as build new ones.

Dr Justyne Caruana pointed out that the Gozo swimming pool, “a project that was promised to Gozo years ago, has finally been started and will be completed by the end of the coming year.”

Speeches were also made by Sean Daly Chairperson of the Gozo Sports Board, Sean Daly and its Chief Executive Officer Alvin Grech.

The most dedicated girl under 12: Leah Said (Athletics)

The most dedicated boy under 12: Liam Daly (Athletics)

The most promising female youth U18: Estelle Scicluna (Softball)

The most promising male youth U18: Darren Sultana (Cycling)

Official of the Year: Joseph Scicluna (Ghajnsielem Red Coats Soft Ball)

The Team of the Year: Victoria Hotspurs (Football)

Coach of the Year: Michael Bongailas – (Athletics)

Sports Person of the Year – Female: Felicienne Mercieca (Athletics)

Sports Person of the Year – Male: Charlton Debono (Athletics).
