Additional aid of €900 per annum is being granted to Gozitan students living and studying Malta, to help towards the rent burden. This will be in addition to the €1,500 already provided by the Ministry for Gozo and will paid by the Housing Authority.
The annoucement was made by the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana and Parliamentary Secretary for Housing Roderick Galdes. Dr Caruana said that “the government is aware of the suffering and challenges faced by Gozitan families when their children go to study in Malta.”
Dr Caruana pointed out that the work of the Ministry for Gozo goes further than direct financial assistance, as work is also underway, both short term and long term to tackle the challenge of rent faced by Gozitan students.
She also mentioned that the Ministry is currently evaluating bids following a call for tender to carry out work on Villa Lauri in Birkirkara, as a place of accommodation for Gozitan students and relatives of people hospitalised in Malta, and which will provide accommodation for up to 33 people.
Parliamentary Secretary Roderick Galdes said, “I understand the reality that Gozitan students already face many challenges when studying Malta. Now with this assitance the students who are investing in their future, can put their minds at rest.”
