A new exhibition – Art Showcase – opens next week in Victoria, with work featured by two local artists who came to live on Gozo many years ago from the UK, one from the North and the other from the South Coast.
Wynne Parker is displaying her hand painted china featuring both traditional and modern designs. During the late 1870s and persisting into the early twentieth century, women using a paintbrush and china paint decorated ceramic objects for their homes.
This old tradition of china painting or on-glaze painting on porcelain then took on a different look. The overglaze technique employed requires multiple firings for each article and careful attention to the order in which colours are applied. The vibrant, clear colours define a unique style.
Celia Denton is exhibiting paintings on canvas, displaying a fondness for acrylics to capture images of landscapes, flowers and children.
Attending Gozo School of Art under the expert tutelage of Denis Mompalao, her newly created pieces explore the concept of texture and creating work that blurs the lines between mediums. A move that has seen a transition from traditional to contemporary paintings.
The Exhibition is being held at the Ministry for Gozo Exhibition Hall, St Francis Square, Victoria, from the 4th to the 13th of June. Entry is free of charge.
There will be a gala evening held for its official opening at the Ministry on the evening of Monday the 3rd ofJune by Dr Alphonse L. MacDonald former International Civil Servant, from 7pm until 10pm, with a performance during the event by the Gozo Community Choir.
Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10am-3pm, Saturday, 11am-3pm, closed Sunday. The exhibition will also be closed on the Public Holiday, 7th of June.
