On Saturday, the Episcopal consecration of Gozitan Mgr. Giovanni Cefai MSSP took place at the Arequipa Cathedral, Peru.
Mgr Cefai was appointed by Pope Francis in April as the first bishop of the territorial prelature of Apóstol de Huancané, Peru.
The Bishop of Gozo Mgr Mario Grech, sent a message for the occasion which was read out during the Mass of Ordination, which was at 5pm Malta time.
Bishop Grech said that bells in the churches of Gozo rang out on the morning of the 22nd of June, marking 136 years since the Blessed Virgin spoke with Carmela Grima and Francis Portelli at the Ta’ Pinu Chapel.
He said that dialogue is continuing today, with thousands of pilgrims visiting the sanctuary every year.
Bishop Grech spoke about the challenges that lie ahead, which are not small, “but from my experience I assure you that, God will bless you in your new status, this I only found out from my own experience.”
“On behalf of the people of God in Gozo we congratulate you,” Bishop Grech concluded.
Bishop Cefai was born on the 5th of August 1967 in Zebbug, Gozo, gave his solemn vows in 1994, and was ordained a priest in 1997. He holds a licentiate in pastoral theology from the University of Malta.
He has served in a number of pastoral roles, including director of the De Piro youth centre in Malta and parish priest of Santa Cruz and currently San Pablo Apóstol in Arequipa, Peru. He is also regional superior of the Missionary Society of Saint Paul in Peru.
