Last January, San Lawrenz Local Council started on a wide scale project called the Solar Water Heater Subsidy Scheme. The aim of which was to encourage the residents of San Lawrenz to purchase an affordable solar water heater. The response was overwhelming, as the majority of the residents of the village are now using solar energy to generate hot water for their homes.
The Council said that this is not the only alternative energy initiative taken by them in the locality. For instance last year the Local Council distributed an energy saving light bulb to every household.
Mayor Formosa expressed his satisfaction that for the second time the Local Council was instrumental in stimulating the concept of energy savering, not only in the locality of San Lawrenz, but also throughout the whole island. He said that despite the small size of the village they can still contribute to the surrounding environment and also help the islands to cut C02 emissions by at least 20% by the year 2020. Such an initiative is expected to reduce 125 tonnes of CO2 emission every year.
The Mayor expressed his gratitude to the local community for their participation, continuous support and help in transforming the locality into an Ecological Village. He also expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Rural Affairs and also The Parliamentary Secretary for Public Consultation for their contribution to the development of this project. Last but not least Mayor Formosa thanked Fritz Energy Ltd. the suppliers of the Solar Water Heaters.
