Gozo ChannelIn the second quarter this year, passengers crossing between Malta and Gozo declined, albeit an increase in ferry boat trips and cars was registered.

In the second quarter of 2009, commuters between Malta and Gozo decreased by 2.7 per cent, totalling 1,008,124 when compared to the same period in 2008. However, the number of vehicles carried by scheduled vessels went up by 3.5 per cent, totalling 274,521. May was the month which saw the most commuters – 346,697. April was the only month which registered increases in commuters, up by 2.2 per cent. This could be attributed to the fact that Easter this year was celebrated in April, whereas in 2008 it was celebrated in March.

The number of trips in the second quarter stood at 4,913, implying an increase of 1.1 per cent over the comparable period the previous year. The highest number of trips was recorded in June – 1,686 or 34.3 per cent of the total number of trips for the period under review.
