Comprehensive road safety plan to include harsher penalties

“Every fatality on our roads leaves behind a family, parents and friends. Each fatality is a person and not a statistic,” said Transport Minister Aaron Farrugia.

The Minister was speaking at a press conference on Wednesday morning, during which he announced a comprehensive road safety plan to start being implemented next year, that he said includes:

* The renewal of the strategy for Road Safety with the aim of reflecting the realities of our country and thus taking us towards 2030;

* The establishment of a Transport Safety Investigations Commission;

* Strengthening the role of the Road Safety Council as an advisor to the Government with the structure and role becoming part of the laws of Malta;

* More enforcement and harsher penalties;

* Change in the culture of safety from an early age. Working closely with educational institutions;

* Safeguarding the safety element in road infrastructure projects;

* Educational and information campaigns throughout the year.

A White Paper will be published for consultation as is proposed the the Transport Safety Investigations Commission, Minister Farrugia said.

The public consultation for the white paper on the Transport Safety Investigations Commission will be open until 15/02/2023. Feedback is to be sent to consultations.mtip@gov.mt.
