Update below – The Malta Union of Teachers has said that it is following a case of aggression against an educator at a school in Gozo on Tuesday.
The MUT, in a statement, said that “the educator was assaulted by a student and as a result suffered a fracture in his arm that could lead to permanent disability.”
The case has also been reported, and is being followed up by the Police, the MUT added.
The union said that it is in contact with the educator concerned, with the school, and is also attending a meeting with the Education Ministry, which was urgently requested by the union, in order to discuss the situation.
The MUT said that it “unreservedly condemns every case of aggression and will continue to report, follow up on cases of aggression against educators and give support to educators who need help.”
No details were provided by the union regarding the school where the incident took place.
The MUT stressed again the need for an adequate support structure in the schools so that these cases do not happen.
Update – The MUT said that it has now had an urgent meeting with the Ministry of Education to discuss the case of aggression against an educator that happened yesterday.
The meeting was held between officials of the MUT, the Minister of Education, the Permanent Secretary and other officials of the Ministry.
The Ministry informed the MUT that it is “setting up a committee to establish the facts in relation to this case.”
The MUT has insisted that the Ministry give all the support to the educator who was a victim of this case, and also to all the educators in the school.
The MUT said that it proposed “to set up a review board in order to analyse the difficult situations that the educators are facing in all the resource centres. This should lead to necessary recommendations to improve the situation.”
The Ministry accepted this request and the board will also have a representative from the MUT, the union said.
