Next Sunday, Fior D’Argenta gets underway in Xewkija square. A traditional family festival of culture, history, drama and traditions, organised by the Xewkija Local Council.
The festival will be held over three days – from Sunday the 27th till Tuesday, the 29th of August.
Fior D’Argenta commemorates the Beheading of St John the Baptist, to whom the Rotunda church is dedicated and is celebrated by the local community on the feast day of the 29th of August.
The festival highlights the revival of many elements and features, which in the past formed part of everyday life, including typical food made from figs and elements of a traditional holiday among others, showcasing everything that the beautiful village of Xewkija has to offer.
There will be fun for all the family with something different on each evening,
On Sunday evening from 8.00pm, There will be a defile with horses ending in the square with a blessing for the horses and a memento for the owners. Traditional music `Ghana,’ will follow, other entertainment includes a bouncy castle and children’s games.
On Monday from 8.00pm that will be traditional Ghana, a musical programme, bouncy castle and children’s games.
On Tuesday evening following the internal feast at the Rotunda church there will be be a musical programme at 8.45pm with the Prekursur Band, and children’s attractions, including a bouncy castle.
The evening’s festivities will conclude with the traditional bonfire lighting -Huggiega of San Gwann – Bonfire of St John – and the cutting and serving of the Torta tal-Bajtar (prickly pear) pie.
